2013 Honda Accord Concept to Reality
Harry Lloyd
Perennial powerhouse
Since the 1970s, the Honda Accord has consistently been one of the best selling, longest lasting, best resale value, highest gas mileage and most reliable
vehicles in its class. It is not just one of the best new car deals of the year, but is one of the best of all time.
However, the competition is much tougher in this car segment than it used to be, and Honda knows this. The concept car for the 2013 Honda Accord was previewed
at the Detroit Auto Show, and is set to make its debut shortly at the
2012 NY International Auto Show
. Honda hopes this newly redesigned take on a classic vehicle is what it
will need to get the edge in this fiercely competitive segment, and solidify itself as the top of the
new car deals again.
New for 2013
The 2013 Honda Accord comes with a new look, but it is nothing too drastic from its traditional look. The overall exterior design is a bit shorter and more angled, but no details of the interior have been finalized yet. Honda seems to feel if it is not broke then do not fix it, which has done this car well for decades.
The biggest change this year is probably the return of the plug in hybrid that was scrapped for the Accord back in 2007. It works similar to the Chevy Volt or Toyota Prius, where it can run on just electricity, on gas-electric or on just gas. The electric only mode can last for a range of 10-15 city miles and at speeds of up to 62 mph before switching over to the gas mode. Honda estimates that it will take 4 hours to charge on 120V and 90 minutes on 240V.
The 2013 Honda Accord will at last get a 6 speed automatic transmission, and will keep their v6 engines. With more and more cars in this segment dropping their v6 engines, Honda claims the improvements to its v6 will easily make it best in class for fuel economy. The
2012 Honda Accord got 23 city / 34 hwy mpg.
The 2013 Honda Accord is expected to remain around the same price as before, which will make it one of the best
new cars for less than 25000 dollars. While they may not be the class dominating powerhouse they used to be, Honda and its Accord have rarely disappointed. More details will come after the New York Auto Show.
