Ford Focusing Attention on Electric and Hybrid Vehicles
Bruce Sheridan
Cars of tomorrow
With gas prices continually climbing like clockwork, drivers and car makers everywhere are fixated on gas mileage. It is a huge driving force behind car buying, national politics, federal legislature and automotive engineering. Ford is always a technological leader when it comes to cars, and it looks like they are going all in with developing more hybrid and electric cars. Even their Ford 4x4 trucks are getting in on the action to bring more fuel efficient options for deals on new cars.
The
Ford 4x4 pickups have always been the strong point of Ford, but with the global shift of focus towards fuel economy they are branching out from their old familiar niche. Ford announced it would be dedicating a large part of its Dearborn Advanced Engineering Center, a whopping 285,000 square feet of it, entirely to the development of hybrid, electric and other alternative fuel vehicles.
Car buyers and law makers both are expecting more mpg out of cars every year, so any car maker that does not act accordingly will surely be left in the dust. Ford plans that 10-25% of their
deals on new cars will be electric, hybrid or plug in vehicles by 2020. While this may be a highly estimated figure, it is hard to say how fast this segment will grow.
Ford has doubled the amount of people working on alternative fuel in the past five years, and by 2013 they expect their production of these vehicles to be double what it was in 2011. Ford has several hybrid, plug in and electric vehicles, including the Focus Electric, Fusion Hybrid, Fusion Energi Plug In and there is even a hydraulic hybrid F-150 in the works.
Non Hybrid fuel savers
Ford released their most fuel efficient vehicle that is not a hybrid or an electric car, its new Fiesta with ECOnetic technology. These are the
cars less than 10 000 with best gas mileage of any vehicle, measuring in with 86 mpg. There are two catches however, since you know this is too good to be true. First, this car is only available in Europe. Second, it runs on diesel fuel.
Diesel is much more popular in Europe, but it is expected to gain ground in America, and when it does you could see more vehicles like this coming state-side. To find where to get a hold of all these revolutionary vehicles, check out the
Ford dealer locator. As Ford continues to push the limits of gas mileage technology, their vehicles will only become more valuable car deals than ever before.
