How to Cut Down on Vehicle Maintenance Costs
Harry Lloyd
Pay attention
Cars, just like anything else, deteriorate and wear down over time. If you don't do your best to keep your car in the best condition possible, it will only happen faster. It's inevitable that your car will die eventually, but keeping up with regular check ups and buying
low maintenance cars can really save you money in the long run.
Keeping your car healthy won't happen on its own, and it's pretty easy to procrastinate things like oil changes and buying new tires. It will take some dedication and effort, but the money saved and the extra miles you can get out of your
used vehicle can really make it worth it.
Driving habits
Before we get into the mechanical issues, take an honest look at how you drive. Driving efficiently is an art, and it takes some practice. Speeding not only uses more gas, it actually makes cars less efficient. It also puts more stress on your brakes and throttle than it normally does, especially if you tailgate and are constantly speeding up and hitting the brakes.
Driving smoothly and calmly not only
saves you money on gas, it puts much less wear and tear on your car. Driving aggressively is literally throwing money away.
Mechanical maintenance
Not everybody is a mechanical genius, but there are several very easy do it yourself fixes that every driver should know. Many of the regular check ups are easily learned as well, and the more you learn and do yourself, the less money you spend hiring someone else to do it.
Your owner's manual will have all the scheduled recommended maintenance, and you should follow it as closely as possible. It will tell you how often you need to check and change your fluids, which is critically important.
Changing your oil is not very difficult, but things like flushing your radiator are not as simple.
Your tires are also very important to your car's health. Keeping them properly inflated is incredibly simple and cheap, and will not only keep you safe, it will save you money on gas. Keep your tires rotated as well. This means switching the front and rear tires to avoid one set wearing out much faster than the other.
Whether you are a do it yourself driver or you hire a mechanic, it is critically important to regularly check and maintain your vehicle. It will not only save you money now, it will keep your car on the road for miles and miles to come.
