Read up on things that have happened to others, or could happen, and figure out roughly the upkeep that the car would have this list would be things like:

• Oil Change Frequency (is it synthetic, partial, or not)
• Tires
• Batteries, lights, etc..

When calculating this you should also keep a sort of 'padding' of funds so you can at least have some preparation in case anything unexpected happens. This will take some researching into the cars, and utilizing a search to find most of the information needed out. However this can be a vital aspect to you for finding the right car for the right price.

This will not only give you some idea of what you can and cannot afford in a car, but also give you a decent idea of what your car will cost you in total. After deciding on roughly what your future car would cost you, you can then start to search for vehicles in your area, and get a good sense of what car you can afford.
