Getting Over Driving Test Nerves
Amanda Hart
It's all in your head
Many people, young and old, get very anxious in the days leading up to their driving test. While it is okay to feel some level of stress to keep yourself sharp, it's important to manage it well so that it doesn't affect your performance behind the wheel.
You hear about it all the time, but most people don't really realize how much power your mind has over your entire body. Stress, in small doses, can be healthy.
However when it gets out of control, it can be absolutely crippling. The key to keeping your stress under control is to relax and thoroughly prepare yourself.
One of the biggest rites of passages people go through is taking their driving test. Many people, especially younger people, can get very nervous and stressed out anticipating their driving test.
It's easy for test takers to get excited about their new found freedom and getting their
first car deal, and it's even easier to get the nerves by worrying about failing. It's easier said than done, but there is really no reason to get so worried!
Nothing to fear but fear itself
The fear of failing a test can be haunting. Maybe you're worried about what your friends will say if you fail, or maybe you are so unconfident in your abilities you think that you'll crash on the test.
Either way, getting control of your anxiety will dramatically help your nerves. Instructors know that you are not experienced at driving, and they are not looking for perfection. They want to see you be able to calmly react and adapt to driving situations and conditions, which is something that will come naturally after some practice.
You're not alone
It is actually not uncommon at all to fail your first time or two. In fact, you'd be surprised at how often it happens, and how it's really not a big deal. Ask anyone and they will almost certainly know someone who has failed once or twice.
Make sure you are comfortable with the vehicle that you are testing with. It would be ideal to take the test in one of the
$20000 new cars, especially smaller cars with good handling.
Most new drivers will take the test in their
inexpensive used cars, and they will do fine too. It's most important to be familiar and comfortable in whatever vehicle you use, and that just takes some practice.
Most people feel nervous in one way or another about their driving test. To give yourself the best shot at passing the test, just keep calm and relaxed. Practicing and taking it one step at a time will help you tremendously.
