Advantages and Disadvantages to Buying Used Cars for Sale

New or Used

New or used?

It's the age old question of car buying; should you buy a brand new car or find used cars for sale? The answer, of course, depends on your situation. How much money you are willing to spend, how long you need the car for, what kind of car you need; all these things will influence this decision.

Before you sign on the dotted line for your next car, take a minute to review some of the pros and cons to each side, and then decide which type of car deal would benefit you most in the long run.

Pros for used cars

The most obvious benefit to buying used cars is that they usually cost much less. It also costs less to insure them. There is a lineup of dirt cheap new subcompact cars, however, that cost just as much as an average used car.

When choosing used cars you get a much larger selection however. If you had ten grand to spend on a car, you would never be able to get a brand new SUV. However, with used cars, you could easily find one with enough mileage on it to get it under ten thousand dollars.

When you buy a new car, it depreciates in value instantly when you drive away, as much as 20%. With used cars, whoever bought it new already took that hit for you, so you lose much less value when you drive it away.

Cons to used cars

Although the price tag and insurance rates may be lower for used cars, the financing rates and terms, along with the obvious repair and maintenance costs, will be more expensive.

New cars also come with the latest and greatest technology; something used cars just cannot compete with. They also get much better warranties right from the manufacturer, unless it is a certified used car.
