The Top Fuel Efficient Cars of All Time; 1980 to 2013
There have been many decades pass since the car industry has emphasized the importance of
fuel efficient cars.
The year was 1980 and the American market saw a leap from big to small more efficient cars after the oil embargoes of the 70's.
The technology was not new, but being able to fabricate cars that were well built and attractive to the consumer was new. These
cars included new generations of the VW Rabbit, Chevrolet Sprint, and a new age of
fuel efficient Japanese imports.
Through the years the importance of fuel efficient cars has grown, but so has the public safety concerns. This has developed into a
new age of fuel efficiency in the twenty-first century. If we go through the decades we will see that the
best gas mileage cars
of the past and of today have a lot in common and there are now vehicles with good fuel mileage available for any budget.
Taking a Trip through the Fuel Efficiency of the 80's
In 1980 there was a new generation of auto fabrication and many of the cars produced were becoming more efficient. This can be seen in
cars like the Chevrolet Sprint, and the
Honda Civic CRX.
In the 80's these cars were on their way to becoming classics and started a new wave of fuel economy that would become increasingly
important to consumers in the decades to come.
Jumping from the 90's to the 2000's With Increasing Fuel Economy
In the 90's fuel economy was making its way and there were more imports being fabricated that expressed the consumer's needs to have more fuel
economy. There were compacts from all makes, which even included makes like the Chevrolet Chevalier, Cavalier, Corsica and Beretta.
They were not the only ones becoming more fuel economic; one of the best cars for fuel economy of the 90's was the 4th generation Honda
Civic.
The Top Fuel Efficient Cars of The 90's and 2000's
- Honda Civic (1973-2000)
- Honda Insight (2000)
- Chevrolet Berreta (1986-1996)
- VW Jetta (1979 to present)
- VW Rabbit (1974 to present)
- Ford Taurus(1986 to present)
- Toyota Prius (1997 to present)
- Chevrolet Volt (2010 to Present)
- Ford Fusion (2006 to present)
At the turn of the century the need for fuel economy was kicking into full gear and, makers like Honda and Toyota were preparing
to market their best in auto fabrications, with the
new hybrid luxury car models
that today are at the top of the list of the top fuel economy cars. These cars today include brands from some of the top manufactures
of both domestic and foreign cars. This includes the new 2013 Chevrolet Volt which is Chevrolet's most fuel efficient car to date with
almost 40 miles per gallon on the 1.4 gasoline engine, and 100 miles per 35kwh(a little over one gallon of gasoline) of electric power.
With the 2013 model year, there are a lot of choices for fuel economy, and these choices can get a much as 40mpg
without comprising power. The
Ford Fusion
is a great example with a model that has over 200 horse power and a electric motor that can push it at speeds of up to 62mph.
There is no telling what the future may hold, but it is sure that fuel efficiency will be part of the auto industry for a long time to
come.
